The origin of the keyboard

The first typewriter was patented in the United States by Christopher Latham Sholes in 1868. This was his first attempt to design a typewriter, but it was rough. The dull machine is far from perfect. The typewriter is designed to use the so-called lead puller to type letters and characters: when the user taps a button, the lead pull bar will lift upwards, impacting the ink. In the original keyboard design of this typewriter, the buttons are arranged in two rows in alphabetical order, but the result of this layout is that the position of the most commonly used letters such as TH and ST is better. In order to eliminate this kind of failure, Shoals made a lot of attempts, and the result was that he rearranged the layout of the buttons. In 1868, Shoals worked with educator Amos Densmore to better arrange the layout of the keyboard letters, leaving more room for the frequently used letter keys. The result of this adjustment was that people found it difficult to find buttons and therefore could not type with high efficiency.
But as time went by, some people who mastered this new button layout began to feel that the new layout actually helped to increase the typing speed because the buttons would not get stuck. This is the origin of the QWERTY keyboard, which first appeared in 1872.
The first typewriter entered the market in 1874 and was sold by Remington & Sons, the name of the typewriter Remington No. 1. Some people may think that this typewriter will be sold out as soon as it is listed, because at that time, it is the latest and greatest mass production technology equipment. But the truth is that most people turn a blind eye to this typewriter. The reason is that there are still some problems with this typewriter, and Shoals has not yet found the ideal customer for the equipment he invented, but the most critical issue is the so-called mechanical writing in the late 1870s. The idea is still quite weird to most people.
At that time, the conventional writing method that people could accept was a clear and easy-to-recognize common handwriting method. Many people feel that mechanical writing is vulgar and even rude. The idea of ??Shoals is that the typewriter he invented would be attractive to pastors and literati, and then he could further promote it to the general public; but he never even thought about using it. business use. All of these factors are likely to be the reason why this typewriter was initially unsalable.
Four years later, after a slight adjustment to the keyboard layout, Remington & Sons produced a new Remington No. 2 typewriter. The keyboard layout of Remington No. 2 is already the same as the keyboard used today, and the SHIFT key can also be used to switch between uppercase and lowercase letters. The name of the SHIFT button comes from the fact that it allows the typewriter tray to switch positions, so that the upper and lower letters are used to pull uppercase or lowercase letters. Today, the SHIFT button on the keyboard has not caused mechanical position changes in the typing device, but the name has been used.
With the increasing popularity of typewriters, people no longer complain about seemingly weird keyboard layouts, but instead begin to remember button positions and learn how to type more efficiently. Although other keyboards have been tried to enter the market, most people finally decided to continue using the QWERTY keyboard. Later facts proved that other types of typewriters failed to succeed.
In the early 1930s, attempts were made to change the keyboard layout. This event is quite famous in history. At the time, Washington State University professor August Dvorak set out to develop a more user-friendly keyboard. In the end, he redesigned the keyboard layout to arrange all the vowels and the five most commonly used consonants in the middle row, AOEUIDHTNS.
Although this new layout requires the typewriter to change hands frequently to play the most words, with the keyboard designed by Dvorak, people can use the middle row of buttons to type the 400 most commonly used words in English. In comparison, only 10 QWERTY keyboards can be used. In addition, the use of Dvorak’s keyboard allows the typist to move most of the words without moving the finger over a large span, which is not possible with QWERTY keyboards.
Dvorak wants to prove that the typewriter he designed is better than the design of Shoals, but the keyboard has never become popular. Many studies used to test the efficiency of Dvorak’s keyboards indicate that they are flawed, or because the test was conducted by Dvorak itself and is considered a conflict of interest.
The General Services Administration of the General Services Administration of the United States conducted a study of the keyboard of Dvorak in 1953. The result is that it is not important to determine which keyboard to use, because the typing speed of experienced typists is no matter which keyboard is used. They are all about the same. The results of the study say that the difference in typing speed is more in the technical proficiency of the typists, and not because of which keyboard is superior to the other in the large-scale word sampling range.
The end result of this incident was that the Dvorak keyboard eventually disappeared because most people were reluctant to spend time or resources to receive training in order to adapt to a new keyboard layout. Therefore, the QWERTY keyboard has been in use ever since, and it seems that it will continue to be used in the foreseeable future.
As Dvorak himself said: changing the keyboard layout is like proposing to change the ‘Moses Ten Commandments’ and the ‘Golden Rule’. It is necessary to abandon every moral principle and become a ridiculous message.
